We often need to contact a person or company urgently for personal or business reasons, but are unable to find accurate information. A few years ago , the information was only available in printed yellow pages. However, there are many resources available online now, which  can be used to find names and verify information. 

AnyWho  - is an online directory from AT&T. Allows users to find a person or a business in USA. For a business, users can search using either a business category or name, either field is required . City, ZIP or area code and State may also be provided for refining the search.

To find a person, the last name is required, though only the first 4 letters may be provided. For the first name, the first letter is adequate. City, ZIP or area code and State may additionally be provided. There is provision for reverse lookup but residential listings can be removed for privacy reasons.

WhitePages - Like AnyWho, it allows the user to find information about a business or a person but covers both USA and Canada. Last name is required for people search. Email listings are also available. There is an option for email search, reverse phone lookup and reverse address lookup.

Switchboard - allows you find information by entering a business or person's name. Allows to search for a business by distance . It includes maps, directions and also has a phone lookup option.

Intelius - in addition to the standard people search using name, address, phone number, it also allows lookup by Social Security Number (SSN). Information about the criminal record, background check information is available, though some services seem to be paid.
